Disability:

Failed breast reconstruction is a valid diagnosis to draw SSD.

Caution:  If you are widowed prior to reaching 60 and have good Social Security benefits from your spouse or better benefits than drawing on your own, the advice I received from Social Security after the death of my husband was, "Do NOT remarry even one day before reaching 60.  Marrying even one day before reaching the age of 60 could put your rights to that benefit in jeopardy."

Know your benefits.

If you are approaching 60 and widowed or age 62 and divorced from a spouse with whom you were married for at least 10 years, go to the Social Security site for complete information.  The employees at your local SS office may or may not know the answers to key questions.  (Mine didn't.)  I am putting the direct links to the information to make it easier for those who are not familiar with the government's penchant for hiding valuable information like you enjoy an Easter egg hunt.

Information you need if you are applying for Widow/ers benefits.
